The northern European nation of Finland, bordering Sweden, Norway and Russia, is a beautiful holiday destination! Offering gorgeous, untouched landscapes, more than 180,000 lakes and over 170,000 islands, you can become totally immersed in Finland’s natural beauties.

In fact, the largest lake in the country, Saimaa in south-eastern Finland, is the fourth largest in all of Europe, at around 4,400 square kilometres! Finland is a great destination for those looking to explore outdoors – with more than 70 per cent of the country taken over by beautiful forests. The skiing season here can last way over six months too, giving you the chance to dust off your skis or try out a winter sport for the first time, surrounded by awe-inspiring scenery…

Finland’s southern capital, Helsinki, is a fantastic seaside city, home to an array of attractions with its coastline made up of a variety of bays, inlets and islands. The capital hosts an exciting array of festivals, including Walpurgis Night (also known as Vappu), a carnival-like celebration in April/May along the streets.

Located in the region of Uuimma, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, Helsinki is among the world’s northernmost capitals. View the capital’s spectacular cathedral; enjoy the hustle and bustle across the market square; meander around the popular Ateneum art museum and discover the impressive Olympic Stadium, the largest in the country. Families should head to Linnanmäki amusement park here!

Helsinki is perfectly balanced with beautiful architecture and natural beauties! Take advantage of the capital’s shoreline, forests and parks and make sure to check what’s on in the area during your Finland holiday – the capital hosts over 3,000 events every year!

The inhabited sea fortress of Suomenlinna is a Finnish landmark built on six islands, forming part of Helsinki. Take a scenic ferry ride to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and fortress and explore beautiful Suomenlinna on foot. With six museums, pretty parks and an array of restaurants and cafes, the islands offer a stunning day of adventure and relaxation on your Finland holiday!

Lapland is one of the most popular regions visited by tourists! The northernmost region, which borders Sweden, Norway, Russia and the Baltic Sea, is renowned for its fantastic ski resorts, snow-capped panoramic views and the opportunity to see the infamous Northern Lights. This natural phenomena is visible in northern Lapland, where they can typically be seen on clear nights between September and March. The Northern Lights can be seen in southern Finland around 20 nights a year.

Many tourists flock to magical Lapland in the winter months due to its fantastic trekking routes and winter sports, as well as its magnificent Christmas festivities. The region is a winter wonderland in the winter holidays, offering families the chance to meet Father Christmas and be pulled by a sled of huskies or reindeers! If you dream of an unforgettable Christmas, make sure to browse the Travelopo portfolio of holiday homes and apartments across Lapland…

Or visit Turku on your Finland holiday, on the south-west coast! Straddling the Aura River, Turku city is a beautiful area of medieval cobblestone streets, bustling markets and colourful festivals. Explore the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art and the 13th century Turku Castle during your Finland holiday.

The city of Lappeenranta in the south-east of Finland is a fantastic destination for families seeking adventure! With an array of incredible cycling and hiking areas, you can easily fill your holiday itinerary – particularly in the winter months when a handful of great indoor and outdoor activities are on offer, including sled rides and skiing.

Or choose the pretty town of Savonlinna also in the south-east of the country, surrounded by the idyllic Lake Saimaa. Discover Olavinlinna Castle, an impressive 15th century three-tower castle consisting of a main castle with three towers and a bailey, as well as a restaurant and festival halls. Take advantage of the town’s brilliant boating and canoeing spots on the lake or head to Linnansaari National Park on your Finland holiday, located in the middle of the lake Haukivesi, a part of greater Saimaa…

Finland’s highest mountain, Halti, is located in the farthest north-west end of Lapland, peaking at 1,324 metres above sea level. There are more than 70 ski resorts around Finland, many of which are suitable for skiers of all ages and abilities! The skiing season in the country can last from late October until May, with many ski slopes lit up during the darker winter days.

The country’s climate is influenced heavily by the warm ocean current of the Gulf Stream. The summer months see an average temperature of 13 to 17*C while the coldest month of February sees temperatures averaging between -22*C to -38C!
