More on Galicia
Santiago de Compostela city is a great area of the region to explore, notably home to the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, an integral component of the Santiago de Compostela World Heritage Site. The city, and capital of the Galicia region, attracts millions of visitors each year. Many enjoy a stroll through its historic centre and plethora of parks and gardens, while vibrant nightlife comes alive after sunset.
The region’s largest city of Corunna (A Coruña) offers a brilliant seafront promenade to explore as well as sandy beaches to relax on. This modern city is a commercial port of the Atlantic as well as home to a variety of historic architecture, including the famous Tower of Hercules, an ancient Roman lighthouse about 2.4 kilometres from the centre.
The Cíes Islands, off the coast of Pontevedra in Galicia, are a popular Spanish destination for families in particular and a renowned nature reserve. The islands, named by the Romans as ‘The Islands of the Gods’ offer some of the best beaches in the world.
Galicia is also famous for the nearby Cape Finisterre, a rock-bound peninsula on its west coast which in Roman times, was believed to be the end of the known world.
The region has four distinct seasons with the hottest month being July, where temperatures average 18*C (with around eight hours of sunshine). The coldest month of January sees temperatures drop to an average of 7*C.
