More on Piedmont
The mountainous region, which borders Switzerland and France, is a brilliant skiing and snowboarding destination, surrounded on three sides by the Alps with a handful of great ski resorts. The second-largest Italian region is notably home to some of the highest peaks and largest glaciers in Italy, including the huge ice-covered Monte Rosa.
Walkers and hikers are sure to be satisfied on a getaway to Piedmont too, with a plethora of great trails and natural beauties to explore – most famous of all, Lake Maggiore, one of Italy’s largest lakes. The long, thin lake, on the south side of the Alps, is a popular tourist attraction in Piedmont and the nearby Lombardy region. The region is scattered with a brilliant variety of nature reserves too, including the popular Gran Paradiso National Park in the Graian Alps; a trekker’s paradise.
Piedmont is made up of the provinces Alessandria, Cuneo, Novara, Asti, Biella, Verbano Cusio Ossala, Vercilli and Turin, the regional capital. Turin is a fantastic part of the region to explore, home to an array of great attractions, both natural and manmade.
The Museo Egizio archaeological museum is a popular landmark attraction in the capital, as the world’s oldest Egyptian museum. Mole Antonelliana is another major landmark here; a spectacular pieces of architecture and renowned symbol of the vibrant, historic city. The Piazzo Castello city square is a must-see here, lined with an exciting array of attractions from art galleries and museums to theatres and restaurants.
Piedmont enjoys a mild climate throughout the year, with warm and sometimes humid summers and cold but dry summers. The hottest and sunniest month here is typically July where temperatures can soar to 30*C.
