More on Basilicate

Basilicata is a fantastic destination for hikers, scattered with woods, forests and mountains, as well as small charming villages and medieval towns. Around 30 percent of the region is covered in protected areas, with two national parks and two regional parks offering visitors a variety of outdoor activities as well as annual festivals. Winter sports can also be enjoyed here in the winter months, when a white blanket covers the region’s highest peaks.

The unspoiled region’s capital city of Potenza is a great area to visit, as one of the highest regional capitals in Italy. The city bears many traces from ancient times, as well as some gorgeous, natural landscapes, quirky towns and historic sites, including the popular landmark Potenza Cathedral.

The city of Matera is another brilliant area of the region to explore, famous for the Sassi di Matera ancient cave dwellings (and UNESCO World Heritage Site) which date back to prehistoric times. The city is also home to a number of pretty, historic buildings in its old town centre particularly and a handful of brilliant museums – a fantastic day-trip on your Italian getaway!

Basilicata typically enjoys a mild climate, with warm summers and mild winters (and no dry season). The hottest month of July can sea temperatures reach 26*C.
