More on Iceland
Magical Iceland is the perfect destination for a hiking or cycling break in particular, with countless dramatic landscapes to admire and a huge variety of hill climbs and flat plains to explore (by foot, bike or horseback!). There are 30 active volcano systems across the country. Admire the landmark Gullfoss waterfall on your Iceland holiday, located in the canyon of the Hvítá River in the south west…
Amazingly, almost 80 per cent of the country is uninhabited. Much of the Iceland’s terrain consists of mountain peaks and fertile lowlands, with many long, deep fjords and some of the largest glaciers in Europe. Iceland is actually home to Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, and Jökulsárlón, a large glacial lake in the south-east of the country which can be seen clearly between Höfn and Skaftafell. The country has more than 4,500 square miles of glacier – making it hard to avoid walking on ice during your getaway!
Iceland’s capital city is Reykjavik, a vibrant destination, filled with an array of shops, cafes, bars, colourful houses and restaurants serving delicious, Icelandic specialties. The city also offers some fantastic attractions, such as the popular Reykjavík Art Museum, the largest visual art institution in Iceland, and the landmark Perlan, a large, dome-shaped building.
The capital is also home to Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavik’s main landmark and the largest church in the country. Marvel at the spectacular Harpa concert hall and explore the National Museum of Iceland on your holiday to Reykjavik! Theatres, museums, galleries, gardens can fill your itinerary – and the capital offers some fantastic nightlife entertainment!
You can explore a dormant volcano near the capital city too! Visit Thrihnukagigur; a natural phenomenon as the only volcano to be explored on the inside. Hike inside this impressive natural attraction for an unforgettable adventure on your Iceland holiday! Browse the Travelopo portfolio of holiday homes and apartments in and around Reykjavik to find the perfect base for your Iceland adventures…
Magnificent Iceland is one of the best locations to view the spectacular Northern Lights, with Reykjavik becoming more and more popular amongst tourists hoping to see the mystical Aurora Borealis! Seeing the magnificent lights across the night sky is a must on your Icelandic break – if you’re lucky enough to catch them! The best time to see the Northern Lights here is from September to mid-April, where there are full dark nights.
Go east of the buzzing capital and find Þingvellir; a historic, UNESCO World Heritage Site and national park, protected due to its unique natural features. Or discover Snæfellsjökull in the west; an area dedicated to protecting the area’s landscape, plants and animal life, including the Snæfellsjökull glacier. Iceland is also home to Vatnajökull National Park, a protected wilderness area in the south, filled with large glaciers, ice caves and mountain peaks. A significant part of the park is underneath the icecap of the glacier Vatnajökull.
Or head to Akureyri, Iceland’s second city, the beautiful gateway to the north. Relax in the city, discover its handful of great art galleries, walk or horse-ride in the area’s rolling countryside, whale-watch, try and spot the Northern Lights and explore the nearby islands of Hrísey or Grímsey. Húsavík is another fantastic destination on your Iceland holiday, known for its excellent whale watching spots, impressive church and great museums. Check out the holiday rentals across the Travelopo catalogue in and around Akureyri!
The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country, located in a lava field in Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the south-west. The spa’s warm waters are rich in minerals and sulfur; a hugely popular bathing spot amongst tourists.
If you dream of relaxing on your Iceland break, you can find a handful of pretty beaches too, some with black sand, others with golden stretches. Visit sandy Nautholsvik Beach in the capital, or head to the town of Vik for Reynisfjara Beach, with its black sand and pebbles.
Iceland’s climate is very changeable, with four distinct seasons. There are two to three months of continuous daylight in summer, the ‘Midnight Sun’ – the summer season is typically from late May to early September. Summers here can be gloriously warm while winters can be rather mild – but offering dramatically different landscapes depending on the season of your choice!
