More on Pays de la Loire
The French region consists of five ‘départements’: the Loire-Atlantique and the Vendée along the coast and the Mayenne, the Maine-et-Loire and the Sarthe further inland.
This is a brilliant cycling holiday destination in particular, offering more than 2,500 kilometres of signposted cycle routes to explore across the region.
One of the most popular tourist attractions here is the renowned Puy du Fou historical theme park in Les Epesses, in the heart of Vendée. The theme park attracts over 2 million visitors each year – the second most visited in France. Pays de la Loire is also home to the world’s first botanical theme park, Terra Botanica, in the city of Angers.
The region’s capital city of Nantes is a popular destination and vibrant metropolis, located on the Loire River. The 13th century large castle Château des Ducs de Bretagne is a landmark in the historic city, today housing the popular Nantes History Museum. The Théâtre Graslin is another fantastic piece of architecture here, as a beautiful theatre and opera house created in the late 18th century.
Pays de la Loire is also known for its huge variety of beautiful castles, from the Château d’Angers, home to the oldest surviving French medieval tapestry, to the Château d’Apremont, believed to date back to the 13th century.
The region’s temperature microclimate offers dry and hot summers and generally mild autumns and winters. The hottest month of July has an average temperature of 20*C while the best month to swim in the sea is typically August, with the sea temperature averaging 21*C.
