More on Occitania
Stretching along the Mediterranean Coast between Provence and the Pyrénées mountains, the region is made up of 13 diverse departments. The region’s capital city of Toulouse (and capital of the Haute-Garonne department) is a fantastic part of region to explore, lying on the banks of River Garonne. In the heart of the city, the Place du Capitole de Toulouse is a tourist hotspot, surrounded by a great variety of cafes, bars and shops.
The enormous Basilica of Saint-Sernin Romanesque church is a landmark and popular attraction here, dating back to the 11th century. The magnificent piece of architecture is beautiful inside particularly, constructed from red brick and white stone for decorative sculptures. Toulouse is a city of contrasts, offering ancient architecture as well as more than 50 art galleries and a diverse array of major museums.
Occitanie is also home to the famous Arena of Nîmes Roman amphitheatre, in the city of Nîmes. The ancient arena still hosts events and performances today – and is among the best preserved Roman ampitheatres in the world!
Natural beauties galore can be found in the rural Midi-Pyrénées area, with the Pyrenees mountains rising over 3,000 metres on the Spanish border at the southern end of the region. The mountains are one of Occitanie’s most popular tourist attractions all-year round; a fantastic destination for hikers and skiers in the winter months.
The region typically enjoys a warm and dry climate throughout the year, with hot summers and mild winters.
