More on Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The diverse area now covers most of the south-west of the country through its 12 departments, from the Spanish border to La Rochelle. With a number of rivers meandering through the area, Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a fantastic holiday for those seeking adventurous water sports too, from canoeing to idyllic boat-rides.

Nouvelle-Aquitaine offers an interesting array of distinct cities and towns, from popular seaside resorts to historic, quaint villages. History-lovers should head to the sleepy, medieval town of Bergerac, with a beautiful medieval centre scattered with historic buildings and surrounded by vineyards. The large department of Dordogne is another brilliant area to explore, boasting stunning medieval castles and towns, as well as the prehistoric cakes of the Vézère Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The region’s capital of Bordeaux is a popular destination here, offering a historic but vibrant city on the Garonne River. The port city, which itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also renowned for its wines, widely regarded as some of the best in the world. Visitors here can enjoy its plethora of museums, pretty gardens and popular wine-tasting and wine tours. Offering historic sites, an array of activities from sailing to wine-tasting and brilliant modern attractions, it’s no surprise this buzzing city attracts over 2.5 million tourists each year.

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region enjoys a typically oceanic climate, with long, warm summers and cool winters.
