More on Hauts-de-France

The region was created as a result of the merging of Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy regions. The Côte d’Opale (the Opal Coast) 75-mile stretch of coastline is a popular natural attraction here, made up of gorgeous beaches, rugged dunes and imposing cliffs.

The Nord-Pas-de-Calais area, bordered on the north by the English Channel and the North Sea, is made up of the departments of Nord and Pas de Calais. The former region boasts a number of green paradises, from charming gardens to sandy stretches across its 150 kilometres of coastline. The former region of Picardy, which stretches from the sandy beaches of the Somme Estuary nature reserve in the west to the luscious forests of the Thiérache in the east, boasts a rich historic heritage, scattered with medieval cathedrals and impressive chateaux.

The major ferry port of Calais, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais department, attracts around 10 million visitors to its old and modern towns, family-friendly beach, historic monuments, museums and vibrant nightlife.

Hauts-de-France’s largest and capital city of Lille, on the Deule River, is a cultural hub and another popular destination in the region, filled with some fantastic museums (including the popular Palais des Beaux-Arts), picturesque squares, busy markets and shopping malls. As one of France’s largest metropolitan areas (and with one of the largest student populations in the nation), there’s plenty to explore on a holiday here!

Hauts-de-France enjoys a typically temperate climate with warm summers (reaching around 22*C) and mild winters – rain is reasonably frequent year-round.
