The region of Grand Est in north-eastern France is a fantastic area of the country explore, rich with architectural monuments – dating back to the Roman Empire – gorgeous landscapes and an array of colourful, traditional festivals. More on Grand-Est

The region comprises of the former administrative regions of Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine, bordered by the River Rhine in the east. Three mountain ranges can be found here; the Vosges Mountains, near France’s border with Germany, the Jura Mountains and the Ardennes Mountains.

The region’s capital city of Strasbourg, in the Alsace region, is a popular destination here, offering a great array of attractions from museums to theatres. Located on the west bank of the River Rhine, Strasbourg is famous for its historic centre, the Grande Île, which is home to a spectacular complex of monuments including its cathedral, ancient churches and the 18th century Rohan Palace and its museums within. The capital also boasts a fantastic Christmas market (one of the oldest in Europe) – certainly worth a visit on a winter escape!

The city of Metz in Lorraine is another brilliant area of the region to explore, steeped in history and home to a variety of beautiful, historic pieces of architecture, including Metz Cathedral. The city offers the perfect blend of history and modern attractions, including some fantastic galleries and contemporary exhibitions.

Grand Est enjoys hot and humid summers (the hottest month is typically July), with milder springs and autumns and cold, snowy winters.
