Explore its buzzing capital
Budapest is a renowned holiday destination, boasting spectacular historical architecture, delicious authentic Hungarian cuisine in an array of restaurants, fantastic museums and a plethora of activities. A visit to the 13th century Buda Palace historical castle and palace complex is a must here, home to the popular Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum and the National Library – a jam-packed day out for sure!
The city’s Hungarian Parliament Building is also a spectacular sight, as one of Europe’s oldest legislative buildings. A walk across one of Budapest’s central bridges, over the Danube River, promises to create brilliant holiday memories, especially at sunrise or sunset.
Make the most of the climate
The majority of holidaymakers visit Hungary in the summer, where its mild continental climates offers a hot, dry climate and daytime temperatures reaching between 25*C to 30*C. July is predictably the warmest month here, but visitors will still be satisfied on a holiday between August and September. During this time, the days are still warm and the nights comfortably cold.
Late autumn and winter breaks to Hungary are chillier and potentially rainy – but with so much to explore inside, a holiday here is brilliant all-year round! If you’re not dependent on hot days with hours and hours of sunshine, a holiday to Hungary at the end of the year could be perfect for you.
Treat your taste-buds
Hungary is a paradise for food-lovers. With an array of delicious, traditional dishes on offer on every corner, it’s impossible to resist sampling as many ingredients and meals as possible, including its many authentic soups and stews.
From the infamous soup or stew Goulash, to the flatbread Lángos; the meat stew Pörkölt to the crêpe-like Palacsinta, Hungary ticks all the boxes for fantastic savoury and sweet delights. Sweet-toothed visitors simply have to try the Hungarian dessert Gesztenyepüré purée, a mix of chestnuts, sugar and rum, served with whipped cream – heaven on a plate!
Debrecen, the second largest city in Hungary, is another fantastic area of Hungary to explore. A day can be spent enjoying the small but fantastic Debrecen Zoo and Botanical Garden and the Déri Múzeum, a museum containing one of the richest cultural and historical collections in Hungary. It’s hard to miss the 19th century Reformed Great Church of Debrecen on your visit to Debrecen too, standing impressively in the city centre.
