The climate is generally dry in most of the country except on the northern Mediterranean coast which receives more rainfall in winter. In the summer months, Egypt can be incredibly hot through May to August, so make sure to stock up on sun cream!
What to do in Cairo
Egypt’s capital city of Cairo, set on the Nile River, is one of the largest cities in both Africa and the Middle East. A hugely popular tourist destination, the ancient city boasts an extensive array of attractions, natural beauties and activities to fill your holiday itinerary. Of course, a visit to the Pyramids of Giza is a must, the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex, as well as the iconic Great Sphinx of Giza, standing on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities is another great attraction here, home to a great collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. The edifice is one of the largest museums in the region and a must-visit on your holiday.
The public park Al-Azhar Park offers a relaxing, scenic picnic spot on your Egyptian break, covering 30 hectares surrounded by the most significant historic districts of Islamic Cairo. Listed as one of the world’s sixty great public spaces by the Project for Public Spaces, the green area is sure to please all.
Located in the north-east of the country, Cairo is a fantastic destination for a day-trip or long stay on your holiday to this area of the world.
The unique Egyptian cuisine has been influenced throughout history, particularly by its neighbours from the Middle East. The cuisine here depends heavily on legumes such as beans and lentils, as well as vegetables and onions, while the Egyptian bread is commonly served at mealtimes.
Typical dishes here include baba ghanoush (cooked eggplant mixed with tahina, olive oil and various seasonings), ful medames, (a dish of cooked fava beans) and kofta, spiced meatballs often served on a skewer. The traditional Middle Eastern food of falafel is common here, as a deep-fried ball made from ground chickpeas.
The Mediterranean port city of Alexandria is another fantastic destination on your Egyptian getaway, home to an array of Greco-Roman landmarks. The city is notably home to the picturesque Citadel of Qaitbay, a 15th century fortress located on the Mediterranean Sea Coast. The fortress houses a small museum today for visitors to enjoy after a tour inside the impressive historic building.
Alexandria boasts a handful of great museums too, including the Alexandria National Museum, located in a former Italianate mansion, consisting of over 1,800 ancient artefacts, jewellery, weapons and glassware. The Royal Jewellery Museum located in the Zizenia neighbourhood is another great attraction here, as an art and history museum located in the former 20th century palace of Princess Fatma Al-Zahra.
Families are sure to enjoy getting close to the animals at both Alexandria Zoo and Alexandria Aquarium in the city! The zoo, located close to the Smouha neighbourhood, is home to a huge variety of animal species from lions to zebras, as well as a reptile house and museum.
The aquarium, near Qaitbay fort on Alexandria’s Eastern Harbour, exhibits many species from the Mediterranean and Red Seas around Egypt, as well as some freshwater species.
Natural beauties can be found along Egypt’s coasts, boasting mountainous shores and magical underwater ecosystems. Sharm El Sheikh is a great resort town known for its gorgeous sheltered sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and coral reefs, located between the desert of the Sinai Peninsula and the Red Sea.
