Top 5 places to take your kids during the summer holiday

Organising a summer holiday can be a daunting task for many families. Choosing the right destination which will please the grown ups and the kids can be tricky, especially when your group is a mix of explorers, culture-lovers and those dreaming of simply relaxing around the pool.

Staying in a private villa or apartment is a great way to ensure you can kick back and relax with your family – but how can you keep the kids entertained around the clock?

To help you choose a great destination for your family break, we’ve compiled a list of five great places to escape to this summer.

1. Pollença, Mallorca

Mallorca, the Spanish gem in the waters of the Mediterranean sea, has always been a family-favourite holiday destination. Offering safe, sandy beaches and an array of family activities across the island, there’s almost too much to do!

Located in the far north corner of the island, Pollença is a lovely rural area for your family to enjoy. You can keep the kids entertained by visiting Puerto de Pollença, the town’s port, and enjoy its weekly market on a Sunday morning.

Pollença also boasts frequent fairs and fiestas – from wine fairs to its big fiesta at the end of July, La Patrona. This part of the island also offers several sport activities, from abseiling to kayaking. Venturing around the town and its main square of Placa Major is sure to keep the whole family busy and captivated.

2. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, offers a great family-holiday destination with an exciting range of sights and attractions. Child-friendly museums are a great way to interest kids in local history, such as the Museu de Electricidade. A sightseeing trip by tram is also a popular family day-out – giving the whole family a chance to see some of Lisbon’s most famous and impressive historic monuments.

You can easily spend an entire day exploring Lisbon Zoo, which includes a children’s farm for the younger kids and the Oceanário de Lisboa, a popular aquarium in the Portugese capital. Lisbon also offers stunning beaches for the whole family to enjoy, only a short train ride from the centre of the city.

3. Gran Canaria, Canary Islands

Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, is a fantastic family-friendly destination. Kids can pick and choose from many family-orientated activities, including camel rides, scuba diving, snorkeling and a visit to the popular crocodile park, Cocodrillo Park Zoo.

Animal-lovers can also be treated to boat trips and get up close to wild dolphins. A full day can be spent exploring Las Palmas de Gran Canaria city on one of the island’s many tourist buses.

The whole family can also enjoy a visit to Aqua Sur, the biggest waterpark on the island. Along with the island’s stunning beaches, Gran Canaria is a fantastic family-friendly destination for your summer holiday.

4. Paphos, Cyrpus

Cyprus is a beautiful island surrounded by low cliffs and a mix of gold and white sandy beaches. The city of Paphos, located on the southwest coast of Cyprus, is another great destination for your summer holiday. Sightseeing by bus is a must-do for families wishing to explore the modern and vibrant city. You can also step back in time as a family during a fascinating tour of the Baths of Aphrodite.

Paphos offers countless family-orientated activities, including horse-riding, segway tours, a visit to Pafos Zoo and water-fun at Aphrodite Water Park. Visiting the Tombs of the Kings is a popular choice of activity, located about two kilometres north-west of Paphos harbor.
