6 things to add to your Iceland holiday bucket list
The large island of Iceland, located in the Atlantic Ocean near the Arctic Circle, is a popular and fantastic holiday destination. As the second largest island in Europe, Iceland boasts breath-taking landscapes and countless beautiful natural areas of beauty to explore.
To help you make the most of your holiday to Iceland, we’re sharing six great things to tick off your Icelandic bucket list!
1. Brilliant Reykjavik
Iceland’s capital city is Reykjavik, a pretty, relaxed destination, filled with an array of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. The city also offers some fantastic attractions, such as the popular Reykjavík Art Museum, the largest visual art institution in Iceland, and the landmark Perlan, a large, dome-shaped building. The capital is also home to Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavik’s main landmark and the largest church in the country.
Almost 80 per cent of Iceland is uninhabited. Much of the country’s terrain consists of mountain peaks and fertile lowlands, with many long, deep fjords and some of the largest glaciers in Europe. Iceland is actually home to Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, and Jökulsárlón, a large glacial lake in the south-east of the country which can be seen clearly between Höfn and Skaftafell.
3. The Northern Lights
Iceland is one of the best locations to view the spectacular Northern Lights, with its capital city of Reykjavik becoming more and more popular amongst tourists hoping to see Aurora Borealis! Seeing the magnificent lights across the night sky is a must on your Icelandic break – if you’re lucky enough to catch them! The best time to see the Northern Lights here is from September to mid-April, where there are full dark nights.
4. Black Sand Beach
Reynisfjara is a gorgeous black pebble beach near the village Vik in Myrdalur on the south coast, widely regarded as the most impressive black sand beach in Iceland. The beach, located around 180 kilometres from Reykjavik, is a renowned natural beauty on the island, boasting impressive cliffs, shallow caves and of course, striking black sands.
5. Thingvellir National Park
Thingvellir National Park, located in south-western Iceland, offers a fantastic day out on your holiday. The UNESCO World Heritage Site offers brilliant scuba-diving and hiking opportunities with beautiful landscaped backdrops. Iceland is home to some of the world’s most active volcanoes and you can see the continental rift between the North American and Eurasian plates clearly in the cracks and faults through the national park. The park has been a nature reserve since the early 20th century due to this unique tectonic and volcanic environment.
Animal-lovers are in for a real treat on an Icelandic holiday, where you can go whale watching all year round. The best time to see the whales is between May and September; trips from Reykjavik’s old harbor are popular amongst tourists in particular.
