1. The Motherland Monument
The Motherland Monument is a fantastic sight to see, located in Ukraine’s largest city and capital, Kiev. The monumental, steel statue is part of the Museum of The History of Ukraine in World War Two, standing impressively at over 60 metres high upon the museum building. The 560 tonne structure was mounted by a special 100-metre crane – and today is a must-see in this buzzing city!
2. Kiev Zoo
Another brilliant place to visit in Ukraine’s capital city is the popular attraction Kiev Zoo, which is home a great array of animals from tigers to elephants. Located in the centre of the city, the attraction occupies about 40 hectares of land, with over 2,600 animals across more than 300 species. The site attracts around 300,000 visitors each years and is not to be missed as the city’s only zoo!
3. Freedom Square
Freedom Square is another great sight to see on your Ukrainian break, located in Kharkiv, the second largest city in the country. The square is a renowned landmark in the area, as the eighth largest city-centre square in Europe, home to a plethora of events, concerts, meetings and fairs throughout the year. Freedom Square covers nearly 12 hectares in the city and is notably home to the 20th century Derzhprom or Gosprom building, an architectural landmark in itself as the first skyscraper in the country.
4. Arboretum Sofiyivka
Arboretum Sofiyivka is a must-see area filled with natural beauties, as a park and arboretum located in the northern part of Uman city. The popular recreational spot is home to over 2,000 types of trees, a small lake, a tourist centre, ‘House of Science Art’ and many pretty picnic spots for you to enjoy! The park and arboretum understandably attract over 500,000 visitors each year.
5. Lviv High Castle
Lviv High Castle is a historic castle located on the top of the Castle Hill in Lviv. The 14th century castle, which stands in ruins, is the highest point in the city, at 413 metres above sea level. This pretty landmark offers a fantastic panoramic view of Lviv and its green-domed churches, cathedrals and rolling hills – a quiet, scenic picnic spot after a walk through some of Ukraine’s green lands.
6. St Volodymyr’s Cathedral
St Volodymyr’s Cathedral is one of Kiev’s major landmarks, located in the centre of the city. Beautiful inside and out, the 19th century cathedral is the mother cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Kiev Patriarchate. Renowned for its bright yellow exterior, the building is a stunning sight to see day or night, when it is illuminated beautifully.
