6 reasons why we love the Netherlands

Iconic, historical windmills, stunning landscapes and unique attractions to keep you busy… the Netherlands may be a small country, but it has loads to offer for a fantastic holiday!

The north-western European country is a brilliant destination for avid explorers, offering an array of historical sites and cultural hot spots.

We love the Netherlands – check out our top six reasons why!

1. Buzzing Amsterdam

The Netherlands’ capital of Amsterdam is a small but brilliant city definitely worth visiting! Home to the Rijksmuseum National Museum dedicated to arts and history, the Van Gogh Museum, attracting 1.6 million visitors every year and the innovative Stedelijk Museum, there’s plenty of cultural and historical sites to explore.

Of course, a visit to the infamous Anne Frank House, located on the Prinsengracht canal, close to the Westerkerk, is a must here. Amsterdam is also renowned for being a romantic city – offering couples’ bike rides through pretty streets and intimate picnics on its many pretty parks.

2. Canal cruises

Approximately 20 percent of the Netherlands is found below sea level, with 50 percent of its land sitting less than one metre above sea level. The country boasts countless scattered canals and rivers, making a river cruise and the Netherlands an ideal match and attraction on your break here.

Canal cruises are hugely popular in the Netherlands’ capital in particular, offering a fun and unique way of sight-seeing and exploring. A holiday here simply wouldn’t be complete without a tranquil, interesting glide down the city’s streets!

3. Full of life

The Netherlands is a vibrant, lively destination sure to fill your holiday itinerary! Its busy Leidseplein square in Amsterdam is a great example of this, located at the southern end of the city’s central canal ring. You’ll often find street performers keeping the crowds entertained here, from acrobats to jazz musicians.

4. Beautiful parks

If you desire a relaxed holiday picnic with beautiful landscapes on your break to the Netherlands, you’re spoilt for choice with its massive array of public parks, both countryside and city. VondelPark in Amsterdam is the most famous park in the country, welcoming about 10 million visitors each year as the largest city park in Amsterdam.

The country is also home to Keukenhof, also known as the Garden of Europe, the world’s largest flower garden located in the town of Lisse. The beautiful garden boasts millions of flowers, including hundreds of varieties of tulips, flower shows, unique artwork and fun events throughout the spring months.

5. Iconic windmills

Most of us associate the Netherlands with its iconic windmills – with more than a thousand scattered throughout the country, you can’t avoid bumping into one on your travels! The village of Kinderdijk is renowned for its 18th century windmills in particular, located in the Netherlands’ south Holland province. Zaanse Schans, a neighbourhood of the city of Zaandam, also boasts a collection of well-preserved historic windmills and houses to explore.

6. Fantastic attractions

The Netherlands will keep every type of holidaymaker entertained through its massive collection of attractions. As well as its massive collection of museums (more than 70 in total), the country is home to the Heineken Experience for adult travelers, an interactive tour through the beer giant’s history in a former brewery in the capital city.

For families, Rotterdam Zoo is a popular attraction, located in the northwestern part of Rotterdam. The zoo is one of the oldest in the Netherlands, opening originally in 1857, and is today a brilliant day-out for the whole family, offering beautiful botanical gardens, an aquarium and array of animals from otters to red pandas. Artis Zoo, in the centre of Amsterdam, is another brilliant attraction for animal-lovers, offering an aquarium, zoological garden, museum and planetarium.
