Belgium is known to produce the best chocolate in the world – but a holiday to the western European country offers so much more than sweet treats!
We absolutely love Belgium – check out our six top reasons why you should choosing this fantastic country as your next holiday destination…
An iconic square
The Grand Place, located in the central square of Brussels, is a fantastic attraction to visit on your holiday. The square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and surrounded by Brussel’s Town Hall, a variety of guildhalls and an array of beautiful century-old buildings. Understandably, the iconic square attracts tens of thousands of tourists each year and is a must-visit on your trip to Belgium.
As well as the iconic Grand Place, Belgium’s capital of Brussels offers a plethora of exciting attractions and historical monuments. The Musée du Cinquantenaire, located in the Cinquantenaire Park, is one of the biggest museums in the country and home to a wealth of artifacts from prehistoric times. The Atomium is an infamous landmark in the country, standing at 102 metres tall over north Brussel’s suburbia and offering excellent views of the city. Your itinerary will quickly be filled on your visit to Brussels – there’s simply too much to explore!
A beautiful memorial
The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing is a war memorial and landmark in the Belgium town of Ypres. The memorial is one of four British and Commonwealth memorials to the missing in the battlefield area of the Ypres Salient in Belgian Flanders. The memorial bears the names of over 54,000 officers and men who fell in the Ypres Salient and is a hugely thought-provoking and moving monument to visit on your trip to the city.
Belgium is home to Durbuy, often referred to as the smallest town on earth. The 17th century old town is indeed very small – but also a lovely place to visit on your holiday, offering ancient houses, narrow cobbled streets to explore and plenty of shops and cafes to relax in. The town also boasts a great Christmas Market in December – a brilliant sight to see if you’re planning a winter getaway!
A fantastic zoo
Pairi Daiza is a fantastic zoo and botanical garden located in Brugelette, in the province of Hainaut. The zoo is home to over 4,000 animals, from penguins to flamingos, and offers a fantastic day out for the whole family. The zoo also boasts a variety of exhibits and gardens, including the largest Chinese garden in Europe and a rose garden offering more than 700 varieties of roses from around the world.
A chocolate dream!
Belgium chocolate is known for being the best chocolate you can eat! A holiday to the country simply has to involve sampling some authentic, delicious chocolate – which is easy as almost every village around the country has its own chocolate shop.
