6 reasons to explore Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland boasts an exciting array of attractions and natural beauties to explore. From medieval castles across stunning, unspoilt landscapes, to its vibrant capital city of Belfast, there are countless reasons to choose Northern Ireland as your next destination.

You can choose from a huge selection of spectacular road trips or hikes around the country – or spend hours of your days exploring its many landmarks which entice tourists from all over the world every year, including two of the UK’s finest open-air museums!

We love Northern Ireland and everything it has to offer – check out our top six reasons why you should be exploring this beautiful, green country next!

1. Giant’s Causeway

The Giant’s Causeway is a fantastic tourist attraction definitely worth exploring on your trip to Northern Ireland. It is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, which came about as a result of an ancient volcanic eruption around 60 million years ago. As Northern Ireland’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site, the site is not to be missed.

Visitors can enjoy the spectacular surrounding scenery from a grass roof at the visitor centre here, which offers 360 degree views of the gorgeous coastline. With the right weather, you may be able to spot Scotland from here! There are also four great trails at the Giant’s Causeway, offering brilliant picnic opportunities throughout and panoramic cliff walks.

2. Belfast Castle

Belfast Castle is another brilliant attraction worth visiting. The Belfast Castle Estate is adjacent to one of the highest spots in Belfast, Cave Hill, offering fantastic and unobstructed views over Belfast Lough and the city. The castle boasts beautiful parkland and is home to many different species of wildlife while the impressive building stands in its prominent position around 400 feet above sea level.

3. Londonderry’s Millennium Forum

The Millennium Forum in Londonderry, the second city of Northern Ireland, won’t disappoint! The theatre (and conference centre) in Newmarket Street was the first purpose built theatre in Derry, opening in 2001. Today, it hosts an exciting array of shows, with a seating capacity of 1,000, from comedy to musicals. It’s worth checking what’s on at this impressive theatre and booking tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

4. Carrickfergus Castle

Another great castle worth exploring in Northern Ireland is Carrickfergus Castle, a Norman castle located in the town of Carrickfergus in County Antrim. The building is one of the best preserved medieval structures in Ireland, having been an imposing piece of architecture for more than 800 years.

Visitors here can enjoy a great collection of historical displays as well as cannons dating back to the 17th century. The town of Carrickfergus has been in existence since the medieval times itself and is also a brilliant area of the land to visit on your Irish getaway.

5. Tollymore Forest Park

Tollymore Forest Park was the first state forest park in Northern Ireland and today, is a fantastic area of the country to visit, located at Bryansford, near the town of Newcastle. The beautiful park covers an area of almost 630 hectares at the footy of the Mourne Mountains, offering brilliant walking, horse-riding and orienteering opportunities for the whole family.

The Shimna River flows through the centre of the park, boasting the chance to see kingfishers and otters. Visitors can choose from four waymarked trails in the renowned forest park.

6.Belfast Zoological Gardens

Belfast Zoo, which opened in 1934, offers a great day-out on your holiday to Northern Ireland. The zoo’s 55 acre site is home to more than 1,000 animals and 150 species from chimpanzees to elephants, many of which are sadly in danger in their natural habitat.

The leading conservation zoo, located on the slopes of Cave Hill, is not only a brilliant attraction for the whole family, but a site carrying out important conservation work. The zoo is one of the oldest visitor attractions in Northern Ireland and attracts around 300,000 visitors each year.
