The beautiful city of Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is a fantastic holiday destination. Undoubtedly one of the most romantic cities in Europe, Venice is the perfect couple’s retreat – but also offers brilliant attractions and experiences for every other type of traveller, from solo explorers to families with young children.
With over 100 islands, 400 bridges and 170 canals, there’s plenty to do on a holiday across the city’s six diverse districts, from exploring historic monuments to enjoying an infamous gondola ride through the streets! We absolutely love this popular city – check out our list of six fun things to do on a holiday in Venice…
1) Visit Doge’s Palace
Doge’s Palace is a beautiful landmark in the city, built in Venetian Gothic style on the Piazza San Marco. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, opening as a museum in the early 20th century. Today, the waterfront palace is a popular attraction in the city, offering spectacular sights inside and out, showcasing the heart of Venice history. Hours and hours can be spent exploring the palace courtyard, inside the building, its chambers and the old prison cells.
The square itself (Piazza San Marco) is a brilliant area to explore in itself, dominated by the great church of St Mark and a handful of other great monuments and attractions.
2) Enjoy the views from St Mark’s Campanile
St Mark’s Campanile (Campanile di San Marco) is a famous bell tower and Venetian landmark in St Mark’s Square, standing at 98 metres tall. The tower offers spectacular, panoramic views of the bustling city on your holiday – it’s not to be missed!
3) Watch the sun set on the Rialto Bridge
The Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto) is another brilliant landmark to see on your getaway. The 16th century bridge crosses the Grand Canal with three walkways and is the oldest bridge across the canal! As one of Venice’s architectural icons, a holiday to the city has to involve a stroll across the waters here. Watching an Italian sunrise or sunset from the impressive bridge is sure to be an unforgettable experience!
4) Explore Museo di Storia Naturale di Venezia
The Museo di Storia Naturale di Venezia is a fantastic museum of natural history, perfect for entertaining the whole family. The museum, located in Fondaco dei Turchi, on the Grand Canal, is home to an array of interesting historical displays mainly relating to the natural history of the Venetian lagoon.
5) Journey toIsola di San Michele
The island of San Michele, in the Venetian Lagoon, is a great area of the country to explore. The beautiful island is the city’s cemetery and has been since the early 19th century. While the island is renowned to be dedicated to the dead, it remains a fascinating destination, home to many tombs and memorials of historic figures as well as two churches; the San Michele in Isola and the San Cristoforo. While it may not appear to be a hugely fun activity, the island is truly a peaceful area to visit and relax on your Italian break!
6) Gondola ride
Of course, a holiday to Venice simply wouldn’t be complete without a relaxing gondola ride through its beautiful streets. With most rides lasting around 40 minutes, you can become completely immersed in the beauty of the city. While slowly drifting through the city can be enormously romantic, it’s an experience you’ll never forget, no matter who you’re travelling with! Gondola rides here are hugely popular amongst tourists wishing to sigh-see the floating city in the most relaxing way possible.
