Charming capital of Tirana
Albania’s capital city of Tirana, surrounded by trees and mountains, is a fantastic destination on your Albanian getaway. The city is notably home to Mount Dajt, a mountain and popular national park to the east of Tirana which is certainly worth a visit on your trip!
The capital also boasts Albania’s biggest museum, the National History Museum, which includes an array of archaeological treasures and fascinating exhibitions, as well as the 18th century Et’hem Bey mosque. The colourful streets of Tirana offer many great restaurants, cafes and bars for a taste of life in the green capital.
2. Historical Berat and Gjirokastër
Berat in south-central Albania, and Gjirokastër in the south, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites – and two of the oldest towns in Albania! Berat, located 120 kilometres from the capital Tirana, boasts its spectacular 13th century Berat Castle, as well as numerous Byzantine churches dating back to the same era. Berat is small enough to explore on foot – a visit to Bogove Waterfall, between Berat and Corovode is a must!
The well-preserved Gjirokastër, which lies in the historical region of Epirus, offers cobbled streets and further historical architecture to explore. The so-called ‘city of a thousand steps’, is home to the impressive castle Gjirokastër Fortress, which includes two museums and is open all-year round to visitors.
3) Magnificent castle Rozafa Castle
Rozafa castle, located near the city of Shkodër in northwestern Albania, is a great place to visit on your Albanian break. Set 130 metres high on a rocky hill, the castle offers stunning, panoramic views of Albania, sure to take your breath away…
4) Quaint village Ksamil
