5 things to see on your holiday to Albania

The small, mountainous country of Albania is a great holiday destination; steeped in history and boasting beautiful beaches and attractions for the whole family to enjoy. Located in the Balkan peninsula, with a long Adriatic and Ionian coastline, the country is a history-lover’s paradise, offering an exciting plethora of historical architecture and monuments in particular.

To help you truly make the most of your holiday to Albania, we’ve compiled a list of our top five must-see things in this beautiful country…

  1. Charming capital of Tirana

Albania’s capital city of Tirana, surrounded by trees and mountains, is a fantastic destination on your Albanian getaway. The city is notably home to Mount Dajt, a mountain and popular national park to the east of Tirana which is certainly worth a visit on your trip!

The capital also boasts Albania’s biggest museum, the National History Museum, which includes an array of archaeological treasures and fascinating exhibitions, as well as the 18th century Et’hem Bey mosque. The colourful streets of Tirana offer many great restaurants, cafes and bars for a taste of life in the green capital.

2. Historical Berat and Gjirokastër

Berat in south-central Albania, and Gjirokastër in the south, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites – and two of the oldest towns in Albania! Berat, located 120 kilometres from the capital Tirana, boasts its spectacular 13th century Berat Castle, as well as numerous Byzantine churches dating back to the same era. Berat is small enough to explore on foot – a visit to Bogove Waterfall, between Berat and Corovode is a must!

The well-preserved Gjirokastër, which lies in the historical region of Epirus, offers cobbled streets and further historical architecture to explore. The so-called ‘city of a thousand steps’, is home to the impressive castle Gjirokastër Fortress, which includes two museums and is open all-year round to visitors.

3)     Magnificent castle Rozafa Castle

Rozafa castle, located near the city of Shkodër in northwestern Albania, is a great place to visit on your Albanian break. Set 130 metres high on a rocky hill, the castle offers stunning, panoramic views of Albania, sure to take your breath away…

4)     Quaint village Ksamil

The quiet village of Ksamil, located in the Riviera of southern Albania, offers beautiful beaches across its three islands. The village’s many cafes, bars and restaurants cater for all while pedalo and canoe rides are sure to bring entertainment to your Albanian trip!

5)     Llogara Pass

As one of Albania’s most famous places, the high mountain pass of Llogara Pass is a must-see on your holiday to the green country. The winding road, located in the middle of the Llogara National Park, offers over 1,000 metres of spectacular views above sea level, as well as opportunities to spot golden eagles and fallow deer.
