5 reasons to visit Morocco

The north African country of Morocco, bordering the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, is a brilliant holiday destination all-year round.  The beautiful country is truly an explorer’s paradise; boasting sweeping deserts with imposing sand dunes, rugged coastlines, impressive mountains, gushing waterfalls and enticing caves to explore.

From gorgeous beaches to lively spice markets, it’s easy to get completely immersed in what this thriving country has to offer. Check out our top five reasons to visit Morocco!

1. Magnificent mountains

High Atlas, also called the Grand Atlas Mountains, is an impressive mountain range in central Morocco. As North Africa’s highest mountain range, it’s undeniably a must-see on your Moroccan getaway! The mountain range runs diagonally across the country for almost 1,000 kilometres – meaning trekkers are in for a treat! The range includes Toubkal, the highest peak in the mountains and North Africa at 4,167 metres.

2. Beautiful beaches

Morocco’s climate is generally moderate and subtropical, cooled by the breezes off the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, offering brilliant beach days on your break! From buzzing, family-friendly stretches of golden sands to wind-and-wave battered destinations perfect for surfers, Morocco has it all! The major city of Agadir is renowned for its fantastic beaches in particular, boasting gorgeous, soft sands and pretty, clear waters all-year round (with around seven sevens of sunshine in January!)

Located on the Atlantic coast directly south of Rabat city, Temara Beach is another brilliant destination for sun-seekers, surrounded by a great choice of bars and restaurants. Mehdya Beach is widely regarded to be one of the prettiest beaches in the country, located in Mehdya in Kénitra Province, also offering fantastic surfing experiences for visitors of all abilities. A nearby surf school is also on offer for those looking to learn to surf in the beautiful Moroccan waters.

3. Camel trekking

Camel trekking is a popular activity amongst visitors to the north African country! Riding on the back of a camel along the Sahara desert, with spectacular views of the stunning, panoramic landscapes is an experience you won’t forget. What better way is there to see the world’s largest desert? Morocco is arguably the most accessible slice of the Sahara desert – the best time to go camel trekking here is between September and February.

4. Fantastic Rabat

Rabat, the capital city of Morocco, sits along the shores of the Bouregreg River and the Atlantic Ocean. Easily reachable by train from Casablanca or Marrakesh, the city is a must-visit on your holiday here, home to an exciting array of attractions including the Musée des Oudaia, the national jewellery museum which houses an extensive collection of prehistoric, Roman and Islamic jewellery.

The city is home to a handful of other museums too, including Rabat Archaeological Museum and the Moroccan Museum of Money; a quirky museum and art gallery housed in the historic Mauresque building of the Bank al-Maghrib.

Of course, a visit to Rabat wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Royal Palace. While visitors cannot enter the palace, its magnificent external architecture is a brilliant sight to see in the city. The 12th century Kasbah of the Udayas is also a great landmark to explore, located at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river opposite Salé.

5. Lively Casablanca

Sitting on the Atlantic Coast, the port city of Casablanca in western Morocco is a great area of the country to visit. The modern city boasts its buzzing Place Mohamed V, the central plaza of Casablanca, home to an array of official buildings, pretty gardens and a central fountain.

The exotic city of Casablanca also offers a brilliant market in the city centre to explore, offering great shopping opportunities for authentic Moroccan gifts to bring home! A tour inside the 20th century Hassan II Mosque, the largest mosque in Morocco, is a must during a visit to this beautiful city – a hugely popular tourist attraction and landmark.
