5 reasons to visit Macedonia

Scattered with quaint villages, idyllic lakes and rolling hills, the landlocked Balkan nation of Macedonia is a beautiful holiday destination. Boasting a rich history and a plethora of interesting historical sites to explore, you’re never short of finding something fun to do on your break here.

We love this unspoilt, picturesque and quirky country! Check out our top five reasons why you choosing Macedonia as your next holiday destination won’t disappoint

1. Stunning Skopje

The capital of Macedonia, Skopje, is an incredibly beautiful and quirky city to visit in the centre of the Balkan Peninsula. The city it known for its sprawling Old Bazaar quarter and museums, including the National Gallery of Macedonia, housed in a 15th-century Turkish bath complex. The capital is also home to the Skopje Fortress Kale, a historical fort and archeological excavation site commonly referred to as Kale, believed to date back to the 6th century.

2. Stunning landscapes

Macedonia is largely made up of mountains, lakes and forests – an array of beautiful natural areas to enjoy on your trip. The Matka Canyon is a popular attraction here, covering around 5,000 hectares, located west of central Skopje. The canyon is an explorer’s paradise, boasting enticing caves, peaceful boat rides across the lake and breath-taking scenery.

While the country doesn’t have an ocean coastline, it does boast its UNESCO World Heritage Site Lake Ohrid, considered to be one of the oldest lakes in the world. The lakes offers mesmerizing green waters, straddling the mountainous border between southwestern Macedonia and eastern Albania. The region is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

3. National Park Galicica

A holiday to Macedonia simply wouldn’t be complete without a visit to see Galičica, an imposing mountain situated across the border between the Republic of Macedonia and Albania. The National Park on the Macedonian side of the mountain is a fantastic destination for exploring the country and enjoying exceptional natural beauty. The impressive mountain’s highest peak stands at 2,254 metres.

4. Oozing history and culture

Macedonia has more monasteries, convents and churches than any other place in the Balkans. A great example of this is its southern city of Ohrid on the hilly shores of Lake Ohrid, which boasts a fantastic medieval townscape and its hilltop Samuel’s Fortress. Overlooking the town and the lake, it’s the perfect place to take in the whole city with beautiful, panoramic views. The Church of St. John at Kaneo is also a brilliant historical attraction, as an Orthodox church located on the cliff over Kaneo Beach, overlooking pretty Ohrid city.

5. Beautiful Bitola

The city of Bitola is another great area of Macedonia to explore, located in the southern part of the Pelagonia valley. Bitola is one of the oldest cities on the territory of the Republic of Macedonia and boasts an array of historical buildings, notably its 19th century Church of Saint Demetrius and 17th century stone Clock Tower, which still chimes today! Bitola boasts an urban atmosphere with picturesque surroundings – a destination sure to please all.
