5 reasons to visit Austria

Austria in central Europe is characterized by majestic, snow-capped mountains, fine art, quaint villages, beautiful baroque architecture and rugged Alpine terrain.

A hiker’s and skier’s paradise, this country is also rich with history and culture for you to explore. From the infamous 12th century Burg Kreuzenstein castle just north of capital Vienna, to the renowned popular Naschmarkt flea market, dating back to the 18th century; there’s plenty to see and do!

Notably famed as the native country of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Austria is a fantastic destination for families with small children as well as solo travellers – it ticks all the boxes for a scenic, activity-filled and memorable holiday.

We love this year-round destination – check out our top five reasons to visit the beautiful, German-speaking country of Austria!

Delicious cuisine

Hikers, skiers and avid explorers are sure to appreciate the delicious cuisine on offer in Austria after an active, physically demanding day! Authentic Austrian cuisine typically involves meat, mainly beef, pork, chicken and turkey. Meals here are hearty and full of flavour, with popular dishes including rindsuppe, a beef soup, wiener schnitzel, a pan fried cutlet made from veal and tafelspitz, a boiled meat broth.

Vegetarians can enjoy a huge variety of dishes here too, from the popular topfenstudel, a cream cheese strudel to liptauer, a spicy cheese spread. For sweet-toothed visitors, a taste of authentic apfelstudel here is a must, as well as palatschinken (a pancake dish) and sacher torte, a tasty type of chocolate cake.

Vibrant Vienna

Vienna is Austria’s majestic capital city, located in the country’s east on the Danube River. The large city is home to a plethora of historic buildings, tourist attractions and beautiful landscapes for you to explore on your Austrian getaway!

A visit to the Baroque Schönbrunn Palace here is a must, a former imperial summer residence consisting of over 1,440 rooms and popular tourist attraction today. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important architectural and cultural monuments in Austria, with the building and its gardens spanning over 300 years. Families in particular will enjoy the Tiergarten Schönbrunn, the world’s oldest zoo, located on the palace grounds.

Vienna is also home to Hofburg Palace in the city centre, another former imperial palace built in the 13th century which has housed some of the most powerful people in European and Austria history over the centuries.

Music lovers are sure to enjoy a visit to the Vienna State Opera in the centre of Vienna, which dates back to the mid-19th century. The opera house is widely considered to be one of the most important in the world, as the house with the largest repertoire.

Visitors to the vibrant city can also explore a number of fascinating museums, from the 19th century Kunsthistorisches Museum art museum to the Naturhistorisches Museum natural history museum, boasting an extensive collection of artefacts dating back over 250 years.

The Salzburg Festival

A summer holiday to the Austrian city of Salzburg is sure to involve the prominent Salzburg Festival, a fantastic celebration of music and drama, dating back to the early 20th century. The world-famous festival is a cultural high point in the country, taking place each summer in the city, on the border of Germany. As the birthplace of the famed composer Mozart, Salzburg is a city renowned for excellent music celebrations, as well as picturesque views of the Eastern Alps.

The Sound of Music!

Many visitors to Austria have journeyed to the beautiful country for one very specific reason – their love of the hit 1965 musical The Sound of Music! Shot in the city of Salzburg, visitors flock to see the film locations in the surrounding areas, from Mirabell Palace and Gardens to Salzburg Residence. Many choose to follow Maria von Trapp’s footsteps through a bus/bike tour of the movie locations, sure to include a visit to the Salzburg Marionette Theatre, whose puppets featured in the musical.

The Alps

The Alps stretch from Austria and Slovenia in the east, all the way through Italy, Switzerland and Germany and France in the west. The central Eastern Alps comprise the main chain of the Eastern Alps in Austria, with the highest mountain here standing at 3,798 metres; named Grossglockner. As a result, hikers are in for a real treat on their Austrian break, with a plethora of gentle uplands, long-distance treks and challenging routes, all with breathtaking scenery on offer!

The Austrian region of Tirol, filled with snow-frosted forests, is a brilliant area to explore here. The region is great across summer and winter, offering fantastic hiking, rock climbing opportunities as well alpine skiing and tobogganing in the colder months. Tirol also boasts quaint, traditional villages to relax in, surrounded by some of Austria’s best natural beauties, from crystal clear lakes to imposing mountains.
