5 reasons to holiday to Montenegro

The Balkan country of Montenegro boasts scenic, rugged mountains, rolling hills, medieval villages and a narrow strip of beaches to enjoy – many believed to be the best in Europe! A holiday here is sure to tick all the boxes; an array of attractions, historical sites to explore, delicious authentic Montenegrin cuisine and of course, beautiful sandy beaches to relax on.

We adore Montenegro – check out our top five reasons to choose this beautiful country as your next holiday destination!

1. Beautiful beaches

There are over 290 kilometres of gorgeous, unspoilt coastline and around 70 kilometres of sandy beaches to explore in Montenegro. The country has a Mediterranean climate on the coast, with alpine conditions in the mountains. The most popular time to visit Montenegro is naturally in the summer months, when the average coastal temperature is 27°C – a brilliant time to relax on its beaches or take a dip in its crystal clear waters!

As well as brilliant sunbathing and swimming opportunities, Montenegro is a great place for other water-related activities, such as kayaking, sailing and rafting. A holiday here promises adventures on and off land.

2. Fantastic National Parks

Lovćen National Park boasts breath-taking panoramic views of the renowned black mountain Mount Lovćen, which rises from the borders of the Adriatic basin. The national park offers natural beauties and historical architecture to explore, including the Mausoleum of Njegoš. Montenegro is also home to the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site Durmitor National Park; a hiker’s paradise with protected pine forests and idyllic lakes, formed by glaciers and traversed by rivers.

With even more national parks and protected areas on offer, you’ll never be short of a scenic hiking route or tranquil picnic spot under the Montenegrin sun.

3. The Tara River Canyon

The Tara River Canyon, also known as the Tara River Gorge, is one of Europe’s deepest gorges at a staggering 1,300 metres deep and 82 kilometres long. The Tara River runs through Montenegro for a length of 150km before meeting the Piva River and is a must-see on your holiday here, located in the Durmitor National Park, offering idyllic, stunning natural beauties.

4. Historical architecture

Despite being a fairly small country, Montenegro still has loads to offer for those looking to explore historical monuments and sites. Kotor, a fortified town on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, is home to brilliant examples of this, including a number of beautiful Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches dating back to the 14th century. The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, the oldest church in Europe dating back to the 12th century, is a must-see here.

Montenegro’s Ostrog Monastery is also a great attraction to explore, a monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church situated high up in the large rock of Ostroška Greda. History-lovers enjoy the popular National Museum of Montenegro on a break here, a collection of four museums and two galleries located in Cetinje – enough to fill hours and hours of your holiday!

5. Authentic cuisine

The national cuisine in Montenegro is typically Mediterranean, offering gorgeous flavours and exciting dishes to sample on your holiday! Flavours are generally influenced from Turkey, Serbia and Croatia while many argue traditional Montenegrin food is similar to Italian recipes.

Speciality dishes here include octopus salad, grilled kebabs, thick soups and rice with sea fruits. Kačamak is a popular, hearty dish, a kind of maize porridge made of wheat, barley or corn flour served with cheese and sour milk. Montenegro is also famous for its prosciutto, known locally as Njeguški Pršut and its cheese.
