At over 240,000 square kilometres in size, there are countless natural beauties to admire across the United Kingdom and its four diverse countries. From beautiful, cascading waterfalls, imposing and historic rock formations, to idyllic, untouched green landscapes, the UK is an explorer’s paradise.
Spanning from Cornwall’s Lizard Point in the south to Scotland’s Dunnet Head in the north, there’s plenty to discover on your travels around this gorgeous destination!
While the UK is certainly one of the smaller countries across the globe, there’s so much to see and explore here – check out our top five natural beauties to see in the UK and add them to your travel bucket list!
1. Durdle Door, England
Durdle Door is a world-famous natural beauty located on the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth in Dorset. The massive limestone arch is a beautiful sight to see, with a gorgeous beach close by for sunbathing, snorkelling and cave-exploring! The magnificent arch is believed to have formed around 140 million years ago, with its name ‘Durdle’ deriving from the Old English ‘thirl’, meaning bore or drill.
2. The Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland’s impressive Giant’s Causeway is a fantastic sight to see, as an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns in Country Antrim. The area, which is a result of an ancient volcanic eruption, is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, much of which is owned and managed by the National Trust. Most of the basalt columns are hexagonal, with the tallest standing at around 12 metres high!
3. Fingal’s Cave, Scotland
Fingal’s Cave is a stunning sea cave located on the uninhabited island of Staffa, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. This spectacular geometric cave stands at 72 feet tall and 270 feet deep, offering mysterious hexagonal columns of basalt inside, shaped neatly in the shape of pillars. Visitors can explore the cave through its large arched entrance – boat tours passing the natural beauty are popular amongst tourists in particular. The National Trust for Scotland owns the cave as part of a National Nature Reserve – it’s a must see on your UK travels!
4. Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps, England
The Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps is a stretch of coastline on the north Cornish coast with impressive stone stacks. Located between Padstow and Newquay, the landscape is one of the most popular places to visit on the north coast, with colossal, pointed stacks and gorgeous, crashing waves as a backdrop. Some believes the origin of the name derives from the legend of a giant name Bedruthan who used the stacks as stepping stones! The area boasts gorgeous landscapes with breathtaking views, as well as the dramatic and mysterious scenes of the stone stacks.
5. Sgwd Henrhyd, Wales
Sgwd Henrhyd in Powys, Wales, is the tallest waterfall in southern Wales, with an incredible drop of 90 feet! The waterfall, which lies on National Trust land on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, is a fantastic sight to see in the preserved county of Powys. After admiring the cascading falls, visitors are encouraged to walk through the woodland, down the Nant Llech valley, passing the site of a landslide and disused watermill.
