5 great reasons why we love Switzerland

The mountainous central European country of Switzerland is a fantastic holiday destination, boasting beautiful lakes, legendary mountains, spectacular winter sports, vibrant nightlife scenes and some of the highest (and biggest) waterfalls in Europe, including the impressive Rhine Falls.

This alpine country is a incredible year-round destination, offering idyllic lakes to swim in during the summer months and brilliant skiing slopes throughout the year. We love this stunning, snow-capped and land-locked country – check out our five great reasons to choose Switzerland as your next holiday destination! Dust off your skis, hit the slopes and marvel at the breathtaking landscapes you’ll be spoilt for choice with…

 1)    Majestic mountains

Inevitably, Switzerland is famed for its majestic mountains with the impressive Alps in the south and south-east; the highest and most extensive range system that lies entirely Europe, and the Jura mountains in the north-west.

A natural wonder to add to your travel bucket list is the magnificent Matterhorn, a mountain of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy. At 4,478 metres, it is one of Europe’s highest peaks. The mountain has become an iconic emblem of the Swiss Alps and of the Alps in general, offering excellent hiking and climbing opportunities on your Swiss getaway.

2)    Brilliant Bern

The capital of Switzerland, Bern, is a fantastic area of the country to visit as a gateway to the Alps. The city, set in the heart of Switzerland, is home to a plethora of attractions, from fascinating museums to awe-inspiring palaces. A visit to the 19th century Federal Palace here is a must, crowned by a 64 metres-high green dome, beautifully decorated with stained glass windows. The Kunstmuseum is a brilliant museum to explore in the city, holding more than 4,000 paintings in its extensive collection as Switzerland’s oldest art gallery.

Another popular tourist attraction here is the Bärengraben, also known as the Bear Pit, which houses bears across 6,000 square metres. Visitors can go on a tour of the original bear pit from the 16th century as well as the new attraction.

3)   Epic winter sports

Switzerland is notorious for its fantastic ski resorts and hiking trails, due to its location in the middle of the Alps and being dotted with some of the world’s most iconic mountains. The country boasts over 50 4,000 metre peaks as well as Europe’s biggest glacier, the Aletsch, which is around 23 kilometres long.

The village of Grindelwald, in Switzerland’s Bernese Alps, offers stunning views from the slopes – perfect for both walkers and skiers. With lots of long intermediate runs, it’s a popular destination for experienced skiers in particular. Trains carry skiers to the Kleine Scheideff while the First area behind the old village itself has varied skiing on sunny slopes.

4)    The Fêtes de Genève

The Fêtes de Genève, (Geneva Festival), is an annual summer event in the cosmopolitan city of Geneva and fantastic celebration to attend on your Swiss break! Running between the end of July to August, the festival brings together music of all genres, from reggae to classical, as well as delicious local food and an impressive firework display.

5) Vibrant Zürich

Explore the large city of Zürich, located in north-central Switzerland at the north-western tip of Lake Zürich – a great natural beauty to visit on your travels. A boat trip on the lake is a brilliant way to explore Switzerland’s largest city. You can also spend days exploring the city’s many museums and art galleries, from the Swiss National Museum, hosting collections from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, to The Kunstmuseum Basel, one of the most significant public art collections in Switzerland.

Families are sure to enjoy the Zürich Zoologischer Garten, home to over 2,000 specimens of 300 species from elephants to penguins. The zoo is located on Zürichbergstrasse, on the lower reaches of the Zürichberg in the Fluntern quarter.

From its striking landscapes to its mouthwatering cuisine (holiday-foodies and cheese-lovers in particular won’t be disappointed), there are countless reasons to holiday here!
