Latvia, one of the world’s most beautiful countries, offers a fantastic holiday destination for all. Boasting beautiful pine forests, historical monuments, sandy beaches and a cosmopolitan capital city, holidaymakers are sure to be satisfied on a trip to the north-eastern European country.
Check out our top five reasons to visit Latvia – and try to resist packing!
1. Fantastic Riga
The capital city of Latvia, Riga, is a must-visit on your holiday, set on the Baltic Sea at the mouth of the River Daugava. More than a third of Latvia’s population lives in the capital city, which is a home to a plethora of historical buildings and monuments, notably in the historical centre Vecrīga.
The area is filled with cobbled streets and a variety of architectural germs, such as Riga Cathedral and St. Peter’s Church. Riga itself is a fantastic cosmopolitan city, offering an abundance of shops, restaurants and forms of entertainment, from the popular Latvian National Opera House to the art museum; Riga Art Nouveau Museum.
2. Beautiful forests
Forests cover around 45 per cent of Latvia, offering countless walking and hiking routes through gorgeous, panoramic sceneries. The country is home to over 12,000 rivers and 3,000 lakes – the most notable including The River Daugava, which flows through Russia, Belarus and Latvia, and the Lielupe, in central Latvia. Avid walkers are sure to enjoy exploring Latvia’s Pokaini Forest in particular, an ancient holy site offering brilliant night, sunrise and moonlight tours.
3. A magical palace
Rundāle Palace is an 18th century major baroque palace located in the village of Pilsrundāle, around 12 kilometres west of Bauska. The palace is one of Latvia’s biggest tourist attractions, combining the grand building and gardens into a brilliant museum.
Jelgava is another city worth exploring on your Latvian break, located in the centre of the country, around 20 kilometres south-west of Riga. The city is home to the impressive Jelgava Palace, the largest Baroque style palace in the Baltic States, as well as the popular Jelgava History and Art Museum – and plenty more to fill your holiday itinerary with!
5. Brilliant beaches
Latvia’s landscape is marked by wide, white-sand beaches for holidaymakers to enjoy, with nearly 500 kilometres of coastline altogether. From its popular and family-friendly Jurmala beach, stretching for 26 kilometres along the Gulf of Riga, to the quieter, more secluded Garciems Beach, brilliant for kiteboarders on windy days, Latvia has a beach for everyone.
