Local area

Begur is a pretty medieval village with cobbled streets and whitewashed houses draping the hillside below the ruins of a stone castle. The area is approximately 45 minutes from Girona on the Costa Brava; an inland town, it`s around 1.5 kilometres inland from the nearest beaches.

The town of La Bisbal is home to a ceramic industry, situated 15 mins from Begur, it`s a great visit for ceramics lovers and visitors wishing to buy a memento of the area. The beautiful city of Girona, 45 mins by car, will satisfy the culture-vulture and shopaholic alike and Barcelona is an easy one hour drive. This vibrant city holds many fascinations and if you are feeling very adventurous then the French border is just one hour`s drive away.

There are a few local markets worth visiting, both for food and local crafts. The best can be found in Palafrugell, La Bisbal, Pals and Begur.

Begur is a town with an intriguing history. In the shelter of its medieval castle, coral divers, fishermen, 'Indians' (wealthy emigrants returning from Spain`s West colonies) and cork workers have written a story which is reflected in each street, each house and each corner of the town.

The gastronomy of Catalonia is rich and varied. Principally it is the typical Mediterranean diet of fish and seafood with fresh vegetables, olives and olive oil rice and pasta.

We recommend that visitors try some traditional Catalan dishes whilst on holiday, especially delicious are

Escudella I Carn D'olla, vegetable broth with pork, veal and chicken. Pa Amb Tomaquet,

simply rustic bread, can be toasted, rubbed with tomato pulp and dressed with oil and salt; these delcious breakfast can also be served with ham, sausage or tortilla.

Golf

There is a choice of golf courses around Begur. The Costa Brava has just recently won an award for the The Best Emerging Golf Destination Worldwide by IAGTO. The Costa Brava now hosts some of the finest golf courses in Europe. Please note that it is compulsory in Spain to wear soft spikes, the golf courses will make you change your spikes before you play and charge you. We recommend that you change your spikes before you leave.

Customer reviews

5 out of 5 (22/09/2012)

Fantastic villa in a cracking village.

We had a fantastic time at this villa. We felt like kings and queens of Begur with the villa at the top of the village. There are only about 5 or 6 villas up at the top of the hill and you are not really bothered at all by neighbours or noise - excellent. The villa is a good size and has loads of private parking and the terrance is even larger than it looks in the pictures.

On our arrival there was a package of groceries at the villa which was a brilliant touch - very useful after a long drive down and we had a visit from the rep on our first full day to make sure everything was fine. Great service.

On the subject of nice touches: the villa info pack is brilliant - loads of info about Begur and the surrounding area and lots of suggestions for things to do.

Down in the village there are plenty of restaurants and a few shops for wine, beer, groceries and fresh stuff (and Palafrugell is not far anyway for larger shops). Plenty of watersposrts on offer in the harbour.

After a week here we are chilled out. Great.

We only have a couple of tiny niggles and they are only minor. The pool can be a trifle cool as it does not catch much morning sun due to tree cover, but earlier in the season I bet it is fine. Good to cool off in after catching the sun though!

Second, the hill is pretty steep so if you all want a glass of wine or sangria in one of the lovely beachfront restaurants, then you will have a stiff walk up the hill. Good for the cardio system though and help walk off some of the calories! We didn't really mind it too much.
