Local area
Italy, The Belpaese (Beautiful Country) is one of the single greatest places to visit on earth. From art to food, from stunning and varied countryside to flamboyant fashion, Italy has it all. Italy & Tourism are synomonous as Italy is a history lover's paradise with more than 3000 museums, churches and archeological sites dating back to Roman and Greek times. With 44 sites, Italy has more Unesco World Heritage sites than any other country on earth. Alongside Italy`s art treasures, you`ll find plenty to keep you busy in the countryside. You can ski in the Alps, hike the Dolomites or dive off Sardinia`s golden coast. Adrenalin junkies can catch fireworks on Sicily`s volatile volcanoes. The post-card like scenery that Tuscany has to offer. A row of cypress trees breaking the blue sky on a rolling hilltop. Olive groves and grapevines marching tidily down the side of a slope.
Tuscany is located in central Italy and stretches from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its landscape, artistic heritage and important cities, first of all Florence, make Tuscany an unquestioned protagonist of world tourism. Visitors to Tuscany come for many reasons. Many come in search of fine art, others to explore the extraordinary countryside. Gourmets and wine buffs descend on Tuscany to enjoy the simple yet wonderful cuisine and wine. There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, the difficulty is really where to start. The more you come to know the region, the more extraordinary Tuscany appears.
Surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti, Siena is one of the most beautiful cities of Tuscany. Set on three hills, the city is drawn together by winding alleyways and steep steps, whilst the Piazza del Campo stands at its heart. Few geographical areas in the world can boast of the variety of environment that surrounds Siena. To the north, the richness of the Chianti landscape, woven with vines and olive-trees throughout the hills. Here also are beautiful towns like San Gimignano and Monteriggioni with old walls, winding streets and incredible views.
Volterra is a walled town in Tuscany with medieval and Renaissance buildings, a Roman theater, and Etruscan sites. It's one of Tuscany's most evocative hill towns but usually has far fewer tourists than nearby San Gimignano. Volterra is in central Tuscany, a little south of San Gimignano and west of Siena . It's about 50 kilometers from Florence and a little over 200 kilometers from Rome.
