L OCAIOLO The closest villa to the Abbey, this served as the caretaker s residence. A large spacious house which in past times had to accomodate two families given the fact that there exists two large fireplaces as well as a wood burning oven. A small stream runs between the lovely garden and the road acting as a natural property boundary. The view of the Abbey from the house must be seen and would have provided a sense of security to the old retainers. At night the garden is magic with the larger trees lit complimented, in summer, by fireflies which appear and disappear among the rambling climbing roses. IL PIANO Built in stone, il Piano was home to a large family of Contadini who worked the land for the monks of Abbazia di Spineto. In the large kitchen, we wanted to preserve the wood burning oven. It s lovely making bread together, smelling the traditional aromas while we cook bread, pizza or even vegetables inside it. Later, sitting outside on the grass surrounded by the Tuscan landscapes that go on into the horizon, your gaze falls on a line of Cypress trees dividing the earth from the sky. These secular trees flank the drive to the abbey. At night, in profound silence broken only by the sounds of nature, rabbits come out from the woods to run and dance on the lawn under the moon.
