The closest village, Mercatale Val di Pesa, with shops and restaurants, is just 5 minutes away (2 km), and facilities for horseback riding are available nearby (3 km).<BR><BR>Casale Classico has five bedrooms with five en suite bathrooms. Castagno is an 8 bedroom Premier Villa in the countryside outside of Florence, Tuscany. This important property can count famous historical figures among its owners. The History - Il Castagno was recorded as early as 970 as belonging to the Bishop of Volterra. It was badly damaged and sacked by Piccininos troops in 1430 and by the Sienese army which spent the night there on 13 June 1554. There was already a Mansione or hotel in the farm known as the Osteria Vecchia, which was moved to a larger and more spacious premises in its present site biside the provincial road. It became part of the Castagno farm which was built there in around 1600 by the Senatoria dei Rinuccini family from Florence, both as their own home and to administer the other properties they had acquired in the area. In around 1815 it was inherited by the Marchesi Capponi of Florence. The Grand Duke of Tuscany visited the house on several occasions, together with his retinue, and almost always stopped to dine in the Villa with the Capponi. In 1834 it passed to Marchese Attilio Incontri as part of the dowry brought by his wife, Donna Ortensia, the daughter of Marchese Gino Capponi. The Estate is on Monte Cornocchia. It lies beside the provincial road to Volterra, known as the Volterrana, near the crossroads where one road leads to Volterra, another to San Vivaldo and the third to Castelfiorentino. This is also the meeting point of three valleysthe Elsa, the Evola and the Era. This spot also marks the boundary between three old contadi in the municipalities of Pisa, Florence and Volterrain 1308, three delegates from the three Republics established the territorial boundaries between the districts of Volterra and san Gimignano. The detached villa is surrounded by 12 hectares of private ground. The house is secluded from the bituminised road and accessible only via a a 700 meters private driveway. Its isolated and dominant location on top of a hill guarantees tranquillity, privacy and a stunning viewhere you will enjoy the wonderful panorama of typical Chianti countryside with its gently rolling hills, vineyards, olive groves, cypresses and a Xth century castle in the distance. The house stands in Barberino Val d Elsa, a hilltop village in the very heart of the Chianti area, half way between Florence and Siena. The Elsa valley is one of the most popular regions between Florence and Siena. The historic village center of Barberino is surrounded by sturdy medieval walls; one enters the little town via two large portals, one to the North, coming from Florence and one to the South, leading to Siena (see picture left). The two gateways are linked by the high-streetIt is along this high-street that you will find the Palazzino - a property belonging to the Principe Corsini family.<BR><BR>The facade looks onto the main street of the village, which is very quiet as it has been closed to traffic. The back of the house opens towards the wide landscape. The village of Barberino has two bars, a bank, a small shop, an excellent butcher, a restaurant, a wine bar, a hairdresser, a chemistry and a post office. A good supermarket is just outside the village, in the village of Tavarnelle, 2 km north. Here you will find a wider range of shops as well as a market once a week.<BR> <BR>A small jewel of Renaissance architecture it was built in the traditional alberese stone with architectural features typical of the Tuscan understated elegance. Please notice the finely carved cornices around the main door and the windows as well as the elegant curve of the arches in the courtyard. No famous architect was at work here, this house is an example of the spontaneous sense of style and proportion which the Tuscans developed early on.<BR><BR>The main entrance to the house - a large wooden double door with a Renaissance stone cornice - leads into a courtyard filled with flowers which again opens onto a large terrace (100 sqm) with a pergola for meals outside. From there a few steps lead to the garden, the pool and the open countryside. The pool is located at the lower end of the garden, about 40 steps down from the terrace. The view and the sunsets to be seen from here, as well as from all windows looking out to the back of the house, are magnificent - the famous Chianti hills with vineyards and olive groves and the towers of San Gimignano in the backdrop. <BR> <BR>Il Palazzino used to be lived in by the owners before they moved to the family s Palazzo in Florence and therefore lives up to the standard of an elegant private mansion with all the modern conveniences to which we have become accustomed. Family antiques, books, terracotta flooring, exposed beams and Mediterranean colourings create an elegant and welcoming atmosphere. The house is spacious and even a larger group will find that it is possible to be together in the living and dining areas, or to seek some privacy in one of the many corners both inside and outdoors.<BR><BR>The second floor of the house is located in the rooms where the estate s Vin Santo - the Tuscan dessert wine which is aged in small barrels in the attic for three to five years used to be stored. The space has been adapted in a clever way and the original features give the rooms a special and welcoming atmosphere, reminding one of the children s quarters in elegant mansions of old. There is a large living room with a fireplace and comfortable sofas and chairs from which you will reach the three bedrooms. Views from the windows are magnificent. All six bathrooms of the house have bathtubs with hand-held showers, some with shower curtains.<BR><BR>Maid service and cook are available every day except Saturdays and Sundays at an extra cost. The lady in charge, Dina is a wonderful cook and has worked for the family for 20 years.<BR> <BR><BR>The Chianti area<BR><BR>DistancesFlorence, Siena and San Gimignano can be reached in approx. half an hour. Volterra, Arezzo and Lucca will take about one hour.<BR>Sightseeing in the vicinitythe romantic church of Sant Appiano, Greve s market on Saturdays, the important Basilica de Impruneta, the hilltop town of Colle Val d Elsa, the fortified village of Monteriggioni and the romanesque abbey S. We will provide a list with estates where it is possible to visit the cellars and learn more about how the wine and olive oil are made.<BR><BR>Restaurantsmany good restaurants in Chianti can make eating out a way of discovering the area. Simple local trattorias which have existed for years as well as more sophisticated restaurants specialised in refined cuisine stand door to doorwe have prepared a list of the places we prefer which you will find in the house.<BR> <BR>Craftmanshipthe closeby town of Impruneta is famous for its large terracotta pots which originally were used for the lemon trees and to store olive oil. The town Colle Val d Elsa on the way to Siena is famous for its crystal glass production. In Florence itself you will find a multitude of craftsmen working with silver, leather, wood, glass, pottery, paper and metal. The La Corte estate stretches out over a hillside covered with vineyards, olive trees and woodland. It is set in the very heart of Chianti near the main road from Florence to Siena, only 16 km south of Florence.<BR><BR>This lovely estate on the western fringe of Chianti is owned by one of Italy s oldest families, descendants of both a saint and Pope Clement XII (who commissioned the Trevi Fountain in Rome). At one time the property owner could ride all the way from this estate to their palace in Rome without ever leaving their own land.<BR><BR>Despite its august background, this property is a refreshingly friendly and relaxed estateThe Renaissance Villa (no picture here), one of the finest in Tuscany, stands on the highest hill in the very centre of the estate. The Italian garden overlooking the Pesa Valley and the vast fourteenth century wine cellars and oil jar-storage, built into the embankment in the garden, complete the picturesque scenario.<BR><BR>Having entered the hudge estate, a private access road of approx. 200 m leads to the La Corte farmhouse. La Corte stands by its own (see first picture).<BR><BR>The house has a total 8 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms, therefore a total of 16 people can be accommodated. To assure your privacy the unused rooms will be closed.<BR> <BR>La Corte was completely restored and modern amenities were installed while retaining the original architectural structure and characteristic farmhouse features. The interior is still farm style.<BR><BR>Property description if rented for 12 people:<BR>In the centre of the house is a spacious kitchen with hearth and an old oven for baking bread. The large kitchen leads to a lavender painted dining room. There are two living roomsthe central sitting-room with two sofas and some armchairs and a smaller sitting-room which opens to the garden.<BR><BR>4 airy bedrooms (two with double beds, two with twin beds) all face onto the central living room. The four bedrooms have en suite bathrooms and one of which, the master bedroom, has a small loggia with view overlooking the ancient renaissance villa in the background. Some rooms have antique terracotta tiled floors, others have wooden floors. The brick roof rests on mighty oak beams.<BR><BR>On the ground floor there are 2 double bedrooms with a bathroom each. (One bedroom can be prepared as twin bedroom).<BR><BR>Just outside the dining room there is a terrace for al fresco dining equipped with table chairs and a large garden parasol. A lawn leads to the pool. The farmhouse is just outside of the village, approx. 1.5 km distant. You could even walk there! San Casciano offers a good choice of excellent restaurants, a geleteria, several Cappuccino bars, all kind of grocery shops, a cinema, a bank, a post office and a beautiful local market every Monday morning. In the house you will find a list of recommended restaurants and information about the region. If you travel during the colder months you will enjoy the heated public indoor pool of San Casciano which is only 500 metres from the property.<BR><BR>The villa s location only 1.5 km from the next bus stop is a good base to visit Florence even without a car. During the week buses go regularly to Florence (approx. every 1.5 hours). In Florence the bus will take you to the main train station which is right in the centre of Florence - it is just a short walk from the station Santa Maria Novella to the Cathedral or the Uffizi.<BR><BR>La Corte is suitable for anyone interested in the inner workings of an olive-oil- and wine-producing estate. This is a typical Tuscan stone farmhouse set in the most coveted part of Tuscany, half way Florence - Siena. Part of a 300 hectare estate the farmhouse is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and woodland. Located a few yards from a country road near the medieval hill town of Barberino Val d Elsa in classic Chianti the property affords glorious, uninterrupted views over an area of unspoiled Chianti countryside, overlooking neigbouring medieval hamlets and villages, including the tower of Sant Appiano and San Gimignano in the distance. The south side of the villa overlooks a wide valleyYour eyes will wander into the distance, over the many hilltops of the Chianti landscape to the antique towers of the renowned hill town S. Gimignano.<BR><BR> <BR>The natural-stone house is built around a mediaeval watch-and-lookout tower dating back to the 11th century. It used to serve as a defensive tower for the nearby castle S. Maria Novella. Side wings were added later transforming the house into a farmstead.<BR><BR>Although some time ago Il Podere was completely restored, the antique structure was preserved, thus maintaining the unique character of the place. Originally the villa was furnished for private use, giving the interior ambience authenticity and conveying the charm of a private home.<BR><BR>The rooms are stylishly decorated with antiques owned by the family. Typical regional features include the terracotta floors, the ceiling beams, the large fireplace with small window and the decorative pizza oven in the kitchen. At the panoramic south end the garden merges into the wide, open countryside. The garden not only provides wonderful views but is also furnished with good quality teak furniture. An attractive pergola invites one to sit back and relax. This shady spot is particularly inviting - enjoy a gentle breeze and outdoor meals (near to the kitchen-living room). Sun lounges can be found by the pool, a few steps down the lawn. The pool has been recently made new, it is a 5 x 11 m rectangular pool (the online video shows still the old circular pool). Even when swimming you ll be able to enjoy the spectacular views!<BR><BR>Shopping can be done at the small grocery store in Fiano (2 km). There is also a bar, a butcher, a post office and a cash machine. A supermarket can be found in Certaldo (9 km). There are a number of excellent trattorias in the area.
